The 122nd running of the Boston Marathon took place this past Monday, with 34 New Brunswickers completing the historic race. Cold, windy, and rainy conditions made for a difficult race, though New Brunswickers were no stranger to such conditions.

Matt McNeil of Saint John was the top New Brunswicker on the men's side, finishing with an astonishing time of 2:35:12 to place 51st overall. McNeil was also the 3rd Canadian to cross the line, behind only Olympian Reid Coolsaet of Guelph and Johan Trimaille of Quebec City. Greg Mccann of Fredericton was the second male New Brunswick runner, finishing with a time of 2:54:02, while Greg Sawyer of Saint-Jacques was third with a time of 2:55:43.

Marcie Holland of Saint John was the top New Brunswicker on the women's side, completing the course with a time of 3:19:11. Annie Pellerin and Jessica Kennedy, both of Dieppe, were second and third among New Brunswickers, finishing with times of 3:26:17 and 3:28:39, respectively.

The overall race winners were Desiree Linden of the United States and Yuki Kawauchi of Japan, who finished with times of 2:15:58 and 2:39:54, respectively. Marcel Hugg of Switzerland and Tatyana McFadden of the United States won the wheelchair races, finishing with times of 1:46:26 and 2:04:39, respectively.

"New Brunswick has a long history of fantastic results at the Boston Marathon, and this year was no different," said Gabriel LeBlanc, Executive Director of Athletics New Brunswick. "To see Matt McNeil finish so highly also demonstrates the strength of the province's distance runners."
